In the 8th century, Toledo was conquered by the Moors, who brought with them their Islamic faith and culture. The city flourished under Moorish rule, becoming a center of learning and culture once again. The Moors built many of the city's famous landmarks, including the Alcázar and the Mosque of Cristo de la Luz. During this period, Toledo was also an important center of translation, where scholars from across the Islamic world came to translate ancient Greek and Roman texts into Arabic.

The city's cathedral, which was built during this period, is one of the most famous landmarks in Toledo and is considered one of the greatest examples of Gothic architecture in Spain. In the 16th century, Toledo was a major center of the Spanish Inquisition, and it was here that the Inquisition's tribunals were established.
