The name "Alhambra" is derived from the Arabic word for "the red" likely due to the reddish color of the rammed earth used in its construction. The complex was built primarily between 1238 and 1358, during the reigns of Ibn al-Ahmar, founder of the Nasrid dynasty, and his successors. The Alhambra was originally a fortress, a palace, and a small medina (residential neighbourhood), serving multiple purposes. The first kings of Granada, the Zirtians, had their castles and palaces in the hills of Albaicin, but nothing remains of them. The monarchs Ziries were likely the emirs who built the Alhambra, beginning in 1238. The founder of the dynasty, Muhammed Al-Ahmar, began with the restoration of the old fort, which was completed by his son Muhammed II. The construction of the palaces, including the Casa Real Vieja, dates back to the 14th century and is attributed to two great kings: Yusuf I and Muhammed V. Yusuf I is credited with, among others, the Fourth Comares, the Door of Justice, The Baths, and some towers. His son, Muhammed V, completed the beautification of the palaces with the Hall of Lions, in addition to other rooms and fortifications. After the Catholic Monarchs conquered Granada in 1492, the Alhambra became a Christian court. Later, several structures were built to house prominent citizens, military barracks, a Church, and a Franciscan Monastery. The complex has undergone numerous restorations since the 19th century and is now one of Spain's major tourist attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Alhambra's history is closely tied to the geographical location of Granada, situated on a rocky hill overlooking the city. The complex is surrounded by ramparts and has an irregular shape, limiting with the valley of the river Darro on its northern side, with the valley of al-Sabika on its southern side, and with the street Cuesta del Rey Chico on the eastern side. The Alhambra's strategic location has made it a significant site throughout history, with its beauty and architecture continuing to inspire visitors today. One of the most important structures is the La Vela tower, which offers one of the loveliest views of the Alhambra. The courtyard of the Lions, with its fountains, is one of the most beautiful in the compound. The Alhambra is also home to the Alcazaba citadel, the oldest building in the complex. Visitors can explore the many rooms and halls, including the Salón de los Embajadores (Hall of the Ambassadors), the largest room in the Alhambra. The Alhambra is surrounded by beautiful gardens, including the Generalife, which was the solace of the Granadine kings.
