Sremski Karlovci description

Sremski Karlovci, a town in the Vojvodina province of Serbia, has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. In 1698-1699, the town was the site of a congress that ended hostilities between the Ottoman Empire and various European states, resulting in the Treaty of Carlowitz. This treaty marked the beginning of Habsburg rule in the region, which would last for nearly two centuries.

During this period, Sremski Karlovci became an important center of Serbian Orthodox culture, especially after the abolition of the patriarchate at Peć in 1766. The town was the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Habsburg Monarchy, and the Metropolitan of the Serbian Orthodox Church resided here.

In 1848, the town played a significant role in the Serbian national movement. The Serb National Assembly in Karlovci declared the unification of the regions of Srem, Banat, Bačka, and Baranja, and Josif Rajačić was proclaimed "Serbian Patriarch". This marked the creation of the Serbian Vojvodina, a Serb autonomous region within the Habsburg Monarchy.

The town's cultural and spiritual significance continued to grow, with the establishment of the earliest Serb gymnasium in 1791 and the Orthodox seminary of Sremski Karlovci in 1794. The seminary was the second-oldest Orthodox seminary in the world and still operates today.

The Patriarchate Court, a grand building that dominates the city's skyline, is a must-visit attraction. Although it was under restoration at the time of writing, it is a testament to the town's rich history and cultural significance. The City Museum, located in the Ilion Palace, offers a glimpse into the town's history and is worth a visit.

The town's main square, Branko Radičević Square, is home to several important historical buildings, including the Karlovci gymnasium, founded in 1791, and the City Hall, built in 1811. The square is also adorned with the beautiful Baroque red marble Four Lions fountain, constructed in 1799.

Sremski Karlovci is a place where history, culture, and spirituality come together, making it a unique and unforgettable destination for visitors.
