Krušedol (Krusedol) description
Krusedol, a village in the Irig municipality of Vojvodina, Serbia, is closely tied to the Krušedol Monastery, a Serbian Orthodox monastery on the Fruška Gora mountain. The monastery was built between 1509 and 1514 by Metropolitan Maksim Branković and his mother Saint Angelina of Serbia, the wife of the blind despot Stefan Branković. The monastery was originally intended as a mausoleum for the Branković family.
The name "Krusedol" is derived from the Serbian word "krus," meaning "cross," and "dol," meaning "valley." This name reflects the monastery's location in a valley and its significance as a spiritual center.
In 1716, the monastery was heavily damaged and set on fire by the Turks during their retreat from the region. The holy relics of the Branković family were destroyed, and the monastery's treasury was looted. The monastery was later rebuilt, with the addition of a high, five-storey bell tower in the early 18th century.
Krušedol Monastery is a cultural and historical treasure, boasting a rich collection of old precious icons, manuscripts, and printed books. The monastery's church is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Holy Virgin and is built mostly in the Morava architectural style. The monastery is also the final resting place of many significant historical personalities of Serbia, including members of the Branković family, Serbian patriarchs, and other notable figures.
Krusedol is a must-visit destination for those interested in history, culture, and spirituality. The Krušedol Monastery, with its stunning architecture and rich cultural heritage, offers a unique glimpse into Serbia's past. Visitors can explore the monastery's church, treasury, and library, and pay their respects to the many historical figures buried there. The surrounding Fruška Gora mountain and National Park provide a beautiful natural setting for a day trip or longer stay. The monastery's significance extends beyond its historical importance, as it remains a spiritual beacon for the Serbian Orthodox Church and a symbol of the country's rich cultural heritage.
