Davolja varos (Devil's town) is a rare natural phenomenon located on the Radan mountain in vicinity of the village of Dake, about 90 km southwest of city Nis. It consists of 202 stone figures called earthen heads or towers, on the tops of which there are stone blocks. The towers are from 2 to 15 meters high, and up to 3 meters wide. Davolja Varos is included in the Seven Serbian Wonders , a category of historical and cultural monuments of Serbia.

Đavolja Varoš (Davolja Varos) description
The name Davolja Varos can be translated from Serbian language as Devil's town. The stone pillars (towers) were created by the action of erosion on the soil, with long-term and patient work of nature. They are located in two ravines (Devil's ravine and Paklena ravine), which are divided by a watershed, the final parts of which merge into an erosive headland.
Davolja Varos was the best-placed European candidate in its category, as one of 77 candidates for the seven natural wonders of the world, and it is even more significant that it was in the race until the last vote, which ended in the summer of 2010.
It was placed under protection as early as 1959, and in 1995, Davolja Varos was declared a natural resource of exceptional importance and was placed in the first category of protection.
Davolja varos - how it was created?
The stone pillars were created by the action of erosion on the soil composed of loose but solid material on which there are stones of a larger size. Millions of years ago, the entire area was the center of powerful volcanic activity, which is still evidenced by the multicolored rocks in the back of the pillars.
However, the phenomenon appeared relatively late, and people contributed the most to its creation. By destroying the forest, they opened the way for the destructive action of water, whereby large pieces of rock protected the deeper and softer layers of the earth from the impact of raindrops and washing by water. In that first stage, the soil collapses due to rain and erosion, except under the rocks, which with their weight prevent its further shedding. This is how pyramids and/or towers are created.
The stone blocks on top of the pillars serve as an umbrella, but the torrents of water still pass between the figures, washing away the earth and making them grow taller over time. This phenomenon belongs to the second stage, which consists in ＂final processing＂. Namely, due to the action of natural forces, the pyramids and towers thin out even more, so that in the end they remain regular columns with stone caps.
This geomorphological phenomenon is unique in Serbia and very rare in the world. In Europe, there are similar phenomena in the Alps , as well as in the USA (the famous ＂Garden of the Gods＂). But the towers of Davolja Varos are significantly larger and more stable than in anywhere, which is why they are the most famous natural monument of this type in Europe.
In addition to the stone towers, Davolja Varos is also known for 2 sources of highly acidic water. One is Davolja voda (Devil's Water), a cold and extremely acidic spring with high mineralization, located in Davolja ravine. The Red spring is another spring, with a bit lower mineralization. This kind of water is very rare in the world and is used in spa treatment, because people consider it extremely healing, but scientists warn that the water from the Devil's Water source should not be drunk, because it has not been tested enough.
Folk legends
During the past centuries, many legends about the origin of this unique phenomenon have been spun among the people. According to one folk tradition, it is about petrified wedding parties, where people, on the order of the Unholy One, decided to marry their own brother and sister at any cost. In order for this not to happen, the power of God intervened, turning them all into stone and leaving them to testify that no sin will go unpunished.
That it is a place where mysticism reigns is confirmed by stories about red water, but in fact it is water that washes the vegetation from the slope and is reddish in color due to the admixture of iron ore. In this part of Serbia, in the Middle Ages, there were many iron mines , as evidenced by two shafts in the immediate vicinity of Davolja Varos.
