Beautifully located on the Nerl River, The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin is the symbol of medieval Russia. The church was built in 1165 A.D. and has barely changed since, you still can see 12th century stone carvings on the walls. The town was built between 1158 and 1165 by the order of St. Andrey Bogolyubsky at the mouth of the Nerl River. Russian Orthodox Christians believe that Bogolyubovo was founded on the spot where St. Andrey Bogolyubsky saw a miraculous vision of the Theotokos (Mary, mother of Jesus), who commanded him to build a church and a monastery on this spot. Consequently, the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl was built here.
