In 1387, Sigismund, the young king of Hungary, punished the family by taking away the castle and its estates, following a failed rebellion against him. The king Sigismund gifted Siklós castle to the family Garai. The Garai family owned the castle for a century and they enlarged the fortress in Gothic style, with round bastions and high walls, with the yard surrounded by a multi-floored, ornamented building on three sides. Its carved windows and doors showed off the family's wealth. The arch of the chancel, the beautiful windows, the frescoes and the choir are among the most important examples of Gothic art in Hungary. In 1515, King Wladislas II gave the Siklós castle to the most important official after the king, Emery Perenyi, the royal commander. He rearranged Siklós castle and reconstructed it in the spirit of Renaissance. The Siklós castle was occupied by Turks troops of Sultan Suleiman in 1543, and the castle was used by the Turks for 150 years as a major military base. After taking it back from the Turks, the castle was donated to Count Aeneas Sylvius de Caprara, a general of the emperor. He started the construction of the still existing huge fortress castle, but the works were temporarily terminated after his death. The final touches on the castle were implemented by the Batthyány family in the 18th century. In 1873 the castle was purchased by a Bratislava's attorney called Lajos Benyovszky, his family were the last private owners of the castle. In 1929 the Siklós castle were awarded national monument status. The Siklós castle is now state property. Nowadays, visitors enter over the old drawbridge which leads into the courtyard, whose walls are dotted with firing holes, and to the ramparts. Go up to the ramparts and admire the view of the hillsides. Also worth visiting are the Gothic chapel (15C), the Knights' Hall, the old prison and the torture chamber where you will be treated to graphic explanations of how each instrument of torture worked.
