A country that is a cradle of culture! Whether you prefer the laid-back atmosphere mainland or the vibrant islands vibe, Greece has something to offer every taste. Every destination has a wealth of landmarks and secrets. Because of its geographical position, Greece was a crossroad of civilizations, in which Greek language and culture were dominant, that had left their traces everywhere. The visitor can come into contact with this multi-hued and impressive mosaic through trips into historical, cultural, artistic and folkloric traditions.

Greece description

With over 13,000 kilometers of coastline and some of the most breath-taking islands in the world, Greece is among the top holiday destinations on the planet.

The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature has announced that, out of a long list of 47 countries, Greece ranked second in the Blue Flag quality awards this year (2019) with 515 beaches, 15 marinas and 4 awards for sustainable boating tourism operators. The Blue Flag label is an international symbol of quality and is one of the best known environmental symbols worldwide.

Since Greece is blessed with a healthy and mild climate, the land is fertile and its produce is of high nutritional value. The geography particular to each site is closely connected to the high quality of many of these products so that they are each considered as that area's best ambassadors. So far, more than 100 Greek delicacies have been awarded the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status by the European Union. The list is an impressive one and it gets longer over time. The tasty products promise to offer you new experiences full of flavors and aromas on your next trip to Greece. Greek cuisine, rich with authentic flavors and aromas represents an age-old cultural unity.

Greece is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Situated on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula, it shares land borders with Albania to the northwest, North Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the northeast.

The Aegean Sea lies to the east of the mainland, the Ionian Sea to the west, the Cretan Sea and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Greece has the longest coastline on the Mediterranean Basin and the 11th longest coastline in the world.

Greece features a vast number of islands, of which 227 are inhabited. A region paradisaical and wild, pristine and rugged, whimsical and wondrous, the Greek Islands continue to reign supreme as some of Europe's most coveted holidaying spots.

The Greek islands are traditionally grouped into the following clusters: the Argo-Saronic Islands in the Saronic gulf near Athens, the Cyclades, a large but dense collection occupying the central part of the Aegean Sea, the North Aegean islands, a loose grouping off the west coast of Turkey, the Dodecanese, another loose collection in the southeast between Crete and Turkey, the Sporades, a small tight group off the coast of northeast Euboea, and the Ionian Islands, located to the west of the mainland in the Ionian Sea.

Eighty percent of Greece is mountainous, with Mount Olympus being the highest peak, making the country one of the most mountainous in Europe.

Greece is considered the cradle of Western civilization, being the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, Western literature, historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, Western drama and notably the Olympic Games.

Greeks have a long tradition of valuing and investing in education, which was upheld as one of the highest societal values in the Greek and Hellenistic world. The first European institution described as a university was founded in fifth-century Constantinople. The University of Constantinople was Christian Europe's first secular institution of higher learning, and by some measures was the world's first university.

Rooted in the first century A.D., the Greek Orthodox Church helped shape modern Greek identity and transmitted Greek traditions to the wider Orthodox World.

Greece's rich historical legacy is reflected by its 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites throughout the country, and the 14 further sites that are on the tentative list, awaiting nomination.

The sovereign state of Greece is a developed country with an advanced high-income economy, a high quality of life, and a very high standard of living.

Greece's unique cultural heritage, large tourism industry, prominent shipping sector and geostrategic importance classify it as a middle power. It is the largest economy in the Balkans, where it is an important regional investor.

In Nafplio, which once served as a capital of Greece, we will see its impressive hilly fortress Palamidi (UNESCO Tentative List site) and the town's fortified part, Akronafplia. Later, we will come to the town of Argos to see its archaeological site (UNESCO Tentative List site).

On the way from Nafplio to Sparta, we will visit the archaeological site of Tiryns (UNESCO World Heritage site), a hill fort known from before the beginning of the Bronze Age. It reached its height of importance between 1400 and 1200 BC, when it became one of the most important centers of the Mycenaean world. Tiryns is associated with the myths surrounding Heracles, as his residence during his labors, and some sources cite it as his birthplace.

In Sparta, we will say hello to King Leonidas, king of the Ancient Greek city-state of Sparta, from approximately 530-480 BCE. He died during the Battle of Thermopylae. We will also walk the archaeological site of Sparta.

The next day, we will come to see Mystras (UNESCO World Heritage site), known in the Chronicle of the Morea as Myzethras or Myzithras, a fortified town near Sparta. We will explore the large collection of historic buildings and see the beautiful artworks that have survived inside the churches and other monuments. After returning back to Sparta, we will visit the well-known Olive Oil Museum.

Our next destination is the important site of Messene (UNESCO Tentative List site), the ruins of the large classical city-state of Ancient Messene. The site was founded in the Bronze Age as Ithome, and Ancient Messene was larger than Athens at the time; it had formidable fortification walls that were 9.5 kilometers in length and imposing public buildings and temples. The part of the Walls of Ancient Messene we will see after the archaeological site.

During the next day, we will explore Ancient Olympia (UNESCO World Heritage site), the ruined ancient sanctuary, home of the ancient Olympic Games, and former site of the massive Statue of Zeus, which had been ranked as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Here we will walk its large archaeological site and visit the archaeological museum of Olympia (one of the most important museums in Greece) that houses finds from the archaeological site, including a Praxiteles sculpture.

From Olympia, we will come to the important coastal town of Patras, to see its impressive hilly castle, several sites from Roman times, and the Patras Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Andrew, a grand cathedral dedicated to the First-Called Apostle of Christ, Saint Andrew. This impressive cathedral is considered the largest Orthodox church in Greece and the third-largest Byzantine-style church in the Balkans.

After an overnight in Patras, we will come to see the Patras Archaeological Museum, the second most important after the Acropolis Museum in Athens. After the museum, we will see one of two fortresses intended to protect the entrance of the Corinthian Gulf. The Rio fortress, historically known as the Castle of the Morea, in opposition to its counterpart, the Castle of Rumelia at Antirrio, was built by the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II in 1499 above the ruins of an ancient temple of Poseidon. Along with its twin, the Antirrio Castle, the fortresses were nicknamed the Little Dardanelles.

Before returning back to Athens, we will explore another important and well-known place, Ancient Corinth. Here we will see an archaeological site and museum. We also will see the impressive Corinth Canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. Completed in 1893, it cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese peninsula from the Greek mainland.

tour destinations: Acrocorinth, Agnountos, Argos, Asini, Brauron, Chaeronea, Chalkida, Eretria, Galaxidi, Livadeia, Loutraki, Marathon, Midea, Nafpaktos, Nafplio, Patras, Sikyon, Thiva, Tiryns

We welcome you to travel with us off the beaten path across Central Greece. Our 9-day circle tour from Athens will come to many lesser-known places: archaeological sites with ancient theaters and museums, small ancient monasteries, Mycenaean acropolis and tombs, fortresses and castles, beautiful coastal towns and taverns where locals eat.

We will start our tour with visiting Brauron, one of the twelve cities of ancient Attica, nowadays known as the sanctuary of Artemis, to see its archaeological site and museum. Our next destination is the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods, founded by Herodes Atticus around 160 AD, which today contains ruins of Roman baths and several elegant statues of Egyptian gods.

After that, we will come to Marathon, that town where the Battle of Marathon was in 490 BCE, in which the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the Persians. Legend has it that Pheidippides, a Greek herald at the battle, was sent running from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory, which is how the marathon running race was conceived in modern times. In Marathon, we will explore its archaeological museum.

We will stay two nights in Chalkida (also known as Chalcis or Halkida). From here, we will come to explore the archaeological site of Eretria (UNESCO Tentative List site) with its ancient theater and museum. Eretria was an important Greek polis in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, mentioned by many famous writers and actively involved in significant historical events. The earliest mention of Eretria was by Homer in his Iliad, who listed Eretria as one of the Greek cities that sent ships to the Trojan War.

In Chalkida, we will come to Karababa Castle, an Ottoman castle of the 17th century, to look around, see its small museum with fantastic sculptures from Venetian times, and admire a beautiful viewpoint over the south bay of Chalkida.

From Chalkida, we will come to the town of Thiva (also known as Thebes), one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, which played an important role in Greek myths. This is that Thebes that ended Spartan hegemony at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC. Here we will explore its archaeological museum.

We will walk along a beautiful river, passing by the old medieval part of Livadeia, and will learn the history of the local oracle. In Chaeronea, we will see its ancient theater and see the Lion of Chaeronea. According to Pausanias, the lion was erected by the Thebans to commemorate their fallen.

We will stay overnight in the town of Amfikleia and come in the morning to Mining Park Vagonetto, a unique thematic park and museum where you will have the opportunity to follow the lives of miners and visit a real 18-meter underground gallery, use the existing train, and make stops in themed caves with a guide in various works. On the way to Nafpaktos, we will stop in the beautiful coastal town of Galaxidi.

In Nafpaktos, we will need to see its fortress overlooking the whole bay and learn why this town was always so important. In the old part of Nafpaktos, we will see its small port and say hello to famous Miguel de Cervantes. We will also visit one nearby located monastery.

On the way to Patras, we will admire the beautiful 2880-meter-long Rio–Antirrio Bridge, one of the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges and the longest of the fully suspended type. In the Patras suburb, we visit the Voudeni Mycenaean cemetery, a huge necropolis from 1500 BC with about 70 tombs, 2 of which are enormous.

From Partas, we will take a road to Sikyon, an ancient Greek city-state situated in the northern Peloponnese in the vicinity of Corinth. Here we will explore its beautiful archaeological site and museum. In Greek mythology first attested by Hesiod, here Prometheus tricked Zeus for humanity's benefit and thus incurred his wrath.

We will stay two nights in the coastal town of Nafplio (UNESCO Tentative List site), known for its hilly fortress and old quarter. From Nafplio we will come to explore the archaeological site Midea with one of the largest and best-preserved Mycenaean citadels, the archaeological site Argos (UNESCO Tentative List site) with a large theater, the Odeon, Roman baths, and other ruins, and Tiryns. The Mycenaean Acropolis of Tiryns (UNESCO World Heritage site), a Mycenaean site with 8-meter-thick walls, said to be built by Cyclops. This is the location from which the mythical hero Heracles was said to have performed his Twelve Labors.

On the way from Nafplio to Loutraki, we will visit two destinations: an archaeological site Asini, the ancient city mentioned by Homer, and the small 11th-century serene Agnountos monastery, a beautiful monument of Byzantine art, with a vibrant garden and captivating 1000-year-old frescoes.

After an overnight in Loutraki, before we take the road back to Athens, we will come to explore Acrocorinth, the Acropolis of Ancient Corinth, a monolithic 575-meter-high rock overlooking the ancient city of Corinth. Acrocorinth counts as the most impressive of the acropolis of mainland Greece and one of the most important medieval Greek fortresses.

This is that Acrocorinth that is mentioned in the ancient Corinthian myth from the 2nd century CE, about a dispute between Poseidon (the sea) and Helios (the sun): the verdict was that the Isthmus of Corinth belonged to Poseidon and the acropolis of Corinth (Acrocorinth) to Helios.

As a result, the region is full of cute villages with stone houses, stone bridges, cobblestones, fountains, schools, temples and monasteries.

UNESCO added Zagori to the list of Cultural Landscapes, acknowledging the universal value of Zagori's architecture as a representative example of traditional, stone-built settlements. During our time in Zagori we will also come to a few developed hiking passes, relatively easy but with amazing viewpoints.
