Trikala description
The Lithaios River flows through the city which is distinguished by historical monuments, excellent urban planning, spacious squares, parks and pedestrian streets.
Most of the oldest churches of the city are in the old neighborhood of Varoussi, known for its beautiful narrow alleys and the multi-colored houses of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
Trikala is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country. Also, it has the distinction of being the first "smart city" in Greece.
There are many interesting spots to explore in Trikala and surroundings, besides the Byzantine Castle that dominates the city. The liveliest part of town surrounds the central Square on the riverside.
The region of Trikala has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The city became an important center in antiquity and it was considered to be the birthplace and main residence of the healing god Asclepius (the most important doctor of antiquity). The city exhibited one of the most important and ancient of Asclepius' healing temples, called Asclepieia. The city is mentioned in Homer's Iliad as having participated in the Trojan War. In historical times, the city and the surrounding area experienced prosperity.
A stay in Trikala opens up a wealth of potential day-trips in Central Greece, combining all of the advantages of staying in a sizeable town with access to some of the region's most famous landmarks. For instance, Meteora, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is a little over 30 mins away by car.
