Nafpaktos description

Nafpaktos, in the Corinthian Gulf, is one of the prettiest coastal towns in the country. Combining mountains and sea, it is a popular weekend destination due to its proximity to Athens.

The town has managed to preserve its traditional character throughout the centuries. Blessed with a rich and an interesting history (it was there that the battle of Lepanto took place, and every year at the beginning of October the visitor can see the reenactment of the battle), from the imposing castle (that has some of the largest and most well-preserved fortifications in Greece) you can enjoy breathtaking views over the gulf and the opposite coasts of the Peloponnese, traditional neoclassical architecture and the beautiful and long sandy beaches, which offer a much-appreciated break on hot summer days.

Although, the picturesque port (you will fell in love with it from the first moment you see it), the impressive castle built on the top of the hill, and the blue flag beaches provide the main attraction , there are many things one can do in the town of Nafpaktos. For instance, stroll through the old town of Nafpaktos is a must. There are a lot of cafes, restaurants, shops, sights and more.

One of the most famous Spanish writers, Miguel de Cervantes fought in the Battle of Lepanto and you will see a statue in his honor.

The Venetian Castle of Nafpaktos is not only one of the most beautiful castles in Greece but also one of the most important and best preserved examples of castle architecture in the country. The castle protected the people of Nafpaktos during wars and was unique for its five defensive walls, two of which were built going down to the sea and three walls were constructed at different levels on the hill between the maritime walls and the castle for maximum security.

Nafpaktos, having a Medieval charm, a fairy tale vibe and lush green landscape, is truly a beautiful destination. A real hidden gem. One thing is for sure: Nafpaktos will blow you away!

We welcome you to travel with us off the beaten path across Central Greece. Our 9-day circle tour from Athens will come to many lesser-known places: archaeological sites with ancient theaters and museums, small ancient monasteries, Mycenaean acropolis and tombs, fortresses and castles, beautiful coastal towns and taverns where locals eat.

We will start our tour with visiting Brauron, one of the twelve cities of ancient Attica, nowadays known as the sanctuary of Artemis, to see its archaeological site and museum. Our next destination is the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods, founded by Herodes Atticus around 160 AD, which today contains ruins of Roman baths and several elegant statues of Egyptian gods.

After that, we will come to Marathon, that town where the Battle of Marathon was in 490 BCE, in which the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the Persians. Legend has it that Pheidippides, a Greek herald at the battle, was sent running from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory, which is how the marathon running race was conceived in modern times. In Marathon, we will explore its archaeological museum.

We will stay two nights in Chalkida (also known as Chalcis or Halkida). From here, we will come to explore the archaeological site of Eretria (UNESCO Tentative List site) with its ancient theater and museum. Eretria was an important Greek polis in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, mentioned by many famous writers and actively involved in significant historical events. The earliest mention of Eretria was by Homer in his Iliad, who listed Eretria as one of the Greek cities that sent ships to the Trojan War.

In Chalkida, we will come to Karababa Castle, an Ottoman castle of the 17th century, to look around, see its small museum with fantastic sculptures from Venetian times, and admire a beautiful viewpoint over the south bay of Chalkida.

From Chalkida, we will come to the town of Thiva (also known as Thebes), one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, which played an important role in Greek myths. This is that Thebes that ended Spartan hegemony at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC. Here we will explore its archaeological museum.

We will walk along a beautiful river, passing by the old medieval part of Livadeia, and will learn the history of the local oracle. In Chaeronea, we will see its ancient theater and see the Lion of Chaeronea. According to Pausanias, the lion was erected by the Thebans to commemorate their fallen.

We will stay overnight in the town of Amfikleia and come in the morning to Mining Park Vagonetto, a unique thematic park and museum where you will have the opportunity to follow the lives of miners and visit a real 18-meter underground gallery, use the existing train, and make stops in themed caves with a guide in various works. On the way to Nafpaktos, we will stop in the beautiful coastal town of Galaxidi.

In Nafpaktos, we will need to see its fortress overlooking the whole bay and learn why this town was always so important. In the old part of Nafpaktos, we will see its small port and say hello to famous Miguel de Cervantes. We will also visit one nearby located monastery.

On the way to Patras, we will admire the beautiful 2880-meter-long Rio–Antirrio Bridge, one of the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges and the longest of the fully suspended type. From Partas, we will take a road to Sikyon, an ancient Greek city-state situated in the northern Peloponnese in the vicinity of Corinth. Here we will explore its beautiful archaeological site and museum. In Greek mythology first attested by Hesiod, here Prometheus tricked Zeus for humanity's benefit and thus incurred his wrath.

We will stay two nights in the coastal town of Nafplio (UNESCO Tentative List site), known for its hilly fortress and old quarter. From Nafplio we will come to explore the archaeological site Midea with one of the largest and best-preserved Mycenaean citadels, the archaeological site Argos (UNESCO Tentative List site) with a large theater, the Odeon, Roman baths, and other ruins, and Tiryns. The Mycenaean Acropolis of Tiryns (UNESCO World Heritage site), a Mycenaean site with 8-meter-thick walls, said to be built by Cyclops. This is the location from which the mythical hero Heracles was said to have performed his Twelve Labors.

On the way from Nafplio to Loutraki, we will visit two destinations: an archaeological site Asini, the ancient city mentioned by Homer, and the small 11th-century serene Agnountos monastery, a beautiful monument of Byzantine art, with a vibrant garden and captivating 1000-year-old frescoes.

After an overnight in Loutraki, before we take the road back to Athens, we will come to explore Acrocorinth, the Acropolis of Ancient Corinth, a monolithic 575-meter-high rock overlooking the ancient city of Corinth. Acrocorinth counts as the most impressive of the acropolis of mainland Greece and one of the most important medieval Greek fortresses.

We welcome you to come with us to explore Greece off the beaten track with our 16-day tour from Athens to Igoumenitsa. With this tour, we will explore non-touristy sites of the famous Peloponnese. Prepare yourself for breathtaking views, ancient Orthodox monasteries in mountains, narrow-gauge mountain railroad, non-touristy archaeological sites, small mountain villages, cute coastal towns, amazing viewpoints, and local roads.

We recommend this tour for travelers that already know the main touristic attractions of Greece, and would like to explore Greece off the beaten track.

The tour will start with visiting the Corinth Canal, a famous attraction. We will also come to see a part of Diolkos, a paved trackway in Ancient Greece before the canal was built, which enabled boats to be moved overland across the Isthmus of Corinth.

After, we will come to Nemea, an ancient site, in Greek myth, it was the home of the Nemean Lion, which was killed by the hero Heracles. In Nemea we will see the important archaeological site of the Sanctuary of Zeus and an ancient Greek stadium. We will come to Nafplio (UNESCO Tentative List site) for a 3-night stay.

In the vicinity of Nafplio, we will visit Midea, a main Mycenaean center, to see its Acropolis with a 450-meter cyclopean wall. Our next attraction is Asini; the Acropolis of Asini is on a 350-meter-long rock, with remains from various periods, including walls built in the 4th century BC. In the evening, we will take a walk in Nafplio around the fortress rock to see a beautiful sunset.

During the next day we will visit another attraction near Nafplio: the archaeological site of Argos (UNESCO Tentative List site) to see a large theater, the Odeon, Roman baths, and other ruins. Later, we will come to the Argos archaeological museum to see a very well-organized exhibition.

On the next day we will take a road to Gytheio, and on the way will visit the small coastal town of Plaka, the mountain monastery of Elonas, and stop for lunch in the mountain town of Kosmas, famous for its specific cuisine. In Gytheio, we will try to see its ancient theater and come to a small peninsula with a lighthouse. The same day we will enter the area of the famous Mani Peninsula and will stay 2 nights in Areopoli.

In Areopoli, we will walk its historical center, see the beautiful small Mavromichalis castle, and adore the local fortified houses. From Areopoli, we will come to the abandoned town of Vathia, known for its iconic tower houses, built and served as homes and fortresses for the local families, offering protection against invaders and rival clans. Houses were built between the 18th and 19th centuries when the Mani Peninsula resisted Turkish rule.

We will also visit the small village of Porto Kagio before taking an easy hike to the archaeological site of Tainaro at the southern tip of Greece's Mani Peninsula. Tainaro is famous for ancient ruins, especially the Sanctuary of Poseidon, a significant religious site linked to the mythical 'Gates of Hades' and the Underworld, featuring Roman mosaics, cave temples, and a famous 1887 lighthouse.

After the second night in Areopoli, we will move toward Kalamata. On the way, we will visit the small coastal towns of Limeni, Neo Itilo and Stoupa, and near the village of Kardamyli, visit Mourtzinos Tower, built in 1807, nowadays a complex with a museum, a tower-house, and a unique forge.

From Kalamata, we will come to see the large archaeological site of Messene (UNESCO Tentative List site). It was a classical city-state of Ancient Messene and today is one of the best archaeological sites in the Peloponnese. Ancient Messene, established in 369 BC, became a significant stronghold for the Messenians during their historical conflicts, particularly against Sparta in the Messenian Wars. The site is notable for its impressive fortifications, which include well-preserved walls and towers.

After the second night in Kalamata, we will take the road to the mountain town of Dimitsana, and on the way, visit the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner. The monastery is known as Prodromou Monastery because Prodromos is the Greek title for Saint John the Baptist, meaning 'The Forerunner', as he announced the coming of Jesus Christ. The monastery is dedicated to him and built into the rock of the Lousios Gorge, often called the 'Great Cave' due to its dramatic setting, reflecting its deep connection to this important saint.

We will also see the Open-Air Water Power Museum that highlights water power in traditional society, focusing on pre-industrial techniques and linking them to local history. From Dimitsana we also will come to see Filosofou Monastery, the oldest in Arcadia. The monastery has two complexes: the old one, built in 963 AD, is in a natural cavity, and the new one has a large basilica.

After two nights in Dimitsana, we will continue toward the mountain town of Kalavryta. On the way we will come to see a cute local Zoologikos Kipos zoo, and the ancient Kastria Cave (also called the Cave of the Lakes), which features 13 subterranean lakes and rock formations.

The next day we will spend visiting the Mega Spileon monastery, carved into a sheer cliff face. The Mega Spileon monastery is the oldest solitary in Greece, built in 362 AD, with a fortress-like structure, a 17th-century church, and a museum with relics. The rest of the day we will explore Kalavryta.

The main attraction of the next day is the Odontotos Rack Railway, a mountainous 22-kilometer railway passing through the Vouraikos Gorge, built 120 years ago from the coastal town of Diakopto to Kalavryta. This railway is one of the narrowest railways in the world, with a width of only 75 cm, in order to enable the use of smaller and more flexible wagons.

After an overnight in the coastal town of Nafpaktos, we will visit the calm town of Messolonghi with its beautiful lagoon, and later will come to the archaeological site of Oeniadae (UNESCO Tentative List site) to see its ancient theater and shipyard.

We will stay 2 nights in the coastal town of Vonitsa, where we will explore its Byzantine castle adjusted by the Venetians. In the evening you can enjoy a promenade with a pedestrian pass over the sea to a small islet.

During the last day of our tour, we will come to the coastal town of Lefkada to see Faneromeni Monastery and the Lefkada Archaeological Museum. On the way to Igoumenitsa, we will stop in the coastal town of Preveza to walk its historical center.

By request, we can finish this tour in Ioannina instead of Igoumenitsa.
