It is believed that the city was named after the mythological figure of Lamia, the daughter of Poseidon, and queen of the Trachineans. Lamia, is built in the place of the ancient town of Lamia on the southern slopes of Othri near Spercheios River. Archaeological excavations have shown the site of Lamia to have been inhabited since at least the Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC). The castle of Lamia is located on the highest spot of the city on a rocky hill. From the top of the hill the castle overlooks the city and Sperchios river valley, Kallidromos, Parnassos, Gkiona mountain tops and Maliakos gulf. It is one of the most important monuments in the area, not only for its medieval character but also for the Archeological Museum built in its interior. According to the findings in the castle walls there is a historic continuation from the 5th century B.C. up to the Second World War.
