Corinth description

Corinth

Corinth was founded as New Corinth in 1858 after an earthquake destroyed the existing settlement of Corinth, which had developed in and around the site of ancient Corinth. Corinth derives its name from Ancient Corinth, a city-state of antiquity. The site was occupied from before 3000 BC. But historical sources about the city concerns the early 8th century BC, when Corinth began to develop as a commercial center.

Ancient Corinth

Ancient Corinth was a city-state (polis) on the Isthmus of Corinth, the narrow stretch of land that joins the Peloponnese to the mainland of Greece, roughly halfway between Athens and Sparta.

Ancient Corinth was one of the largest and most important cities of Greece, with a population of 90000 in 400 BC. The Romans demolished Ancient Corinth in 146 BC, built a new city in its place in 44 BC, and later made it the provincial capital of Greece.

For Christians, Ancient Corinth is well known from the two letters of Saint Paul in the New Testament, First and Second Corinthians. Ancient Corinth is also mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as part of the Paul the Apostle's missionary travels. In addition, the second book of Pausanias' Description of Greece is devoted exactly to Ancient Corinth.

It seems likely that Ancient Corinth was also the site of a Bronze Age Mycenaean palace-city, like Mycenae, Tiryns, or Pylos. According to myth, Sisyphus was the founder of a race of ancient kings at Corinth. It was also in Ancient Corinth that Jason, the leader of the Argonauts, abandoned Medea. During the Trojan War, as portrayed in the Iliad, the Corinthians participated under the leadership of Agamemnon.

Acrocorinth

Acrocorinth, understood as "Upper Corinth", is the acropolis of Ancient Corinth, is a monolithic rock overseeing the ancient city of Corinth, Greece. It is count as the most impressive from all acropolis of mainland Greece. Acrocorinth was continuously occupied from archaic times to the early 19th century. Along with Demetrias and Chalcis, the Acrocorinth during the Hellenistic period formed one of the so-called "Fetters of Greece" - three fortresses garrisoned by the Macedonians to secure their control of the Greek city-states. The city's archaic acropolis, already an easily defensible position due to its geomorphology, was further heavily fortified during the Byzantine Empire as it became the seat of the strategos of the thema of Hellas and later of the Peloponnese. It was defended against the Crusaders for three years by Leo Sgouros.

Afterwards it became a fortress of the Frankish Principality of Achaea, the Venetians and the Ottoman Turks. With its secure water supply, Acrocorinth's fortress was used as the last line of defense in southern Greece because it commanded the Isthmus of Corinth, repelling foes from entry into the Peloponnese peninsula. Three circuit walls formed the man-made defense of the hill. The highest peak on the site was home to a temple to Aphrodite which was converted to a church. Currently, Acrocorinth is one of the most important medieval castle sites of Greece.

Corinth Canal

The Corinth canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, arguably making the peninsula an island. The canal was dug through the Isthmus at sea level and has no locks. It is 6.4 kilometers in length and only 21.4 meters wide at its base.

The Corinth canal consists of a single channel 8 meters deep, excavated at sea level, thus requiring no locks. The rock walls, which rise 90 metres above sea level, are at a near-vertical 80° angle.

Several rulers of antiquity dreamed of digging a cutting through the Isthmus. The first to propose such an undertaking was the tyrant Periander in the 7th century BC. The project was abandoned and Periander instead constructed a simpler and less costly overland portage stone carriageway, along which ships could be towed from one side of the Isthmus to the other.

The idea of a canal was revived after Greece gained formal independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1830. Construction was formally inaugurated on 23 April 1882 in the presence of King George I of Greece and was completed on 25 July 1893 after eleven years of work.
