The Rio–Antirrio bridge, one of the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge, connects it with the Peloponnese peninsula. This bridge is widely considered to be an engineering masterpiece, owing to several solutions applied to span the difficult site. Due to the peculiar conditions of the straits and several unique engineering problems special construction techniques were applied. As an alternative, you can also take the ferry and sail along the famous bridge. Antirrio played an important role in the Byzantine and post Byzantine era due to its strategic position. There is a medieval sea-front fortress that experienced several destructions and restorations. Due to its tactical position it became an object of desire and a source of friction among Ottomans, Venetians, Genoese and the Knights of Malta. Today, the well kept Fortress of Antirrio is used for cultural events during the summer months. Nearby, on a hill, there lie ruins of two ancient towns, Makyneia and Molykreas.
