Telč (Telc) description

According to the local legend, Telč was founded in 1099, however the first recorded mention is from 1315. The Telč town was founded as a royal water fort on the crossroads of busy merchant routes between Bohemia, Moravia and Austria. The Gothic castle of Telč was built in the second half of the 14th century. At the end of the 15th century the castle fortifications were strengthened and a new gate-tower built. In the middle of the 16th century the Telč medieval castle was altered in the Renaissance style.

In 1530 a great fire burnt down made of wood houses, and damaged Telč castle. Exactly after that fire the castle has been reconstructed in the Renaissance style. The houses along the central square also were rebuilt in the Renaissance style, with beautiful facades, with gables and arcades.

Nowadays, beside the English-style park that was belong to the original Gothic castle, the most significant sight of Telč is the town square, a unique complex of long urban plaza with well-conserved Renaissance and Baroque houses with high gables and arcades. The town square of Telč since 1992 is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and mentioned as most charming square in the Czech Republic.
