Croatia description

Croatia, officially the Republic of Croatia is a beautiful country at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, on the Adriatic Sea. Inhabited since the Paleolithic Age, it borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the southeast, sharing a maritime border with Italy.

Croatia is a geographically diverse country, featuring low mountains and highlands near the Adriatic coastline, flat plains that hug the Hungarian border, and a multitude of islands. The country has a long coastline with over a thousand islands along its coast at the Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean Sea). The terrain includes rocky coastlines, flat plains along the Hungarian border, densely wooded mountains, lakes, and rolling hills.

Croatia's climate varies by region. In the north, it is continental, while along the coast, it is Mediterranean with hot, sunny summers and mild winters. The central region has a semi-highland and highland climate.

The first Croats settled in the area around A.D. 500. They ruled themselves for many years, but eventually became part of the Hungarian Empire in 1091. When the Ottoman Empire began to expand in the 15th century, they became concerned they would be taken over by the Ottomans, so they asked Archduke Ferdinand if they could join the Austrian Habsburg Empire. In 1868, Croatia again went under the rule of Hungary, which lasted until World War II when it became part of Yugoslavia. The war brought terrible hardships on the country under German and Italian rule. When it ended, the Communist Party took control over the country of Yugoslavia. In the early 1990s, communism collapsed throughout Eastern Europe, and Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia, leading to a civil war that lasted until the Dayton Agreement was signed in December 1995, bringing peace to the area.

The sovereign state of Croatia is a republic governed under a parliamentary system and a developed country with a very high standard of living. Since 2000, the Croatian government has constantly invested in infrastructure, especially transport routes and facilities along the Pan-European corridors.

Tourism is a significant source of revenue, with Croatia ranked among the top 20 most popular tourist destinations in the world. Croatia is famous for its medieval towns and villages, and its pleasant Mediterranean climate makes it a popular holiday destination within Europe. The country offers a variety of cultural attractions, including old towns, fortresses, waterfalls, monasteries, and archeological sites, many of which are UNESCO sites.

Because of its geographical position, Croatia represents a blend of four different cultural spheres. It has been a crossroads of influences from Western, East, Central and Mediterranean culture.

A vast number of resorts along the coast and islands, offer services catering to both mass tourism and various niche markets. The most significant are nautical tourism, as there are numerous marinas with more than 16 thousand berths, cultural tourism relying on appeal of medieval coastal cities and numerous cultural events taking place during the summer. Inland areas offer agrotourism, mountain resorts, and spas. Croatia has unpolluted marine areas reflected through numerous nature reserves and 116 Blue Flag beaches.

Croatia can be subdivided between a number of ecoregions because of its climate and geomorphology. The country is consequently one of the richest in Europe in terms of biodiversity. The most famous protected area and the oldest national park in Croatia is the Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Velebit Nature Park is a part of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme.

Croatia has been recognized for its tourism facilities and has become a member of the European Union (EU) on July 1, 2013. It has also been featured in various travel guides and publications, such as Lonely Planet and Huffington Post, for its unique cultural and natural attractions.

Croatia has a total of 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and 15 UNESCO Tentative List sites.

A global cultural contribution from Croatia is the necktie, derived from the cravat originally worn by the 17th-century Croatian mercenaries in France.
