Korčula (Korcula) description

Korcula, the sixth largest island in the country and one of Croatia's most treasured islands, is known for its dense forest. The main resorts are Korcula Town, known as "Little Dubrovnik" or "Mini-Dubrovnik" because of its medieval squares, churches, palaces and houses; Vela Luka and Lumbarda. There are also smaller towns and villages dotted around on the island for those looking for a more secluded holiday.

Generally, events on the island center around the summer months. The majority of opportunities for sightseeing on Korcula take place in Korcula Town, beautifully located on a small peninsula, with stone houses and bright orange roofs. What the Korcula Old Town lacks in size, it certainly makes up in quality as it is very well preserved; the layout and structure of the Old Town and its walls stem from the second half of the 13th century.

You will notice that the Old Town is laid out in a very special way, resembling something of a fishbone. The town was built in this way to protect against sea winds. The Korcula Old Town has two entrances, Land Gate (Kopnena vrata) to the south, above this gate is also the Revelin tower which you can partially climb up for some scenic views; and the Sea Gate (Primorska vrata) to the west.

One of Korcula’s more unusual claims to fame is that it was the birthplace of Marco Polo. So, you will find numerous places and things named after him. There is no airport on the island, so you will need to reach to either Split or Dubrovnik and then make your way to Korcula by ferry.
