The major resorts are: Hvar, Stari Grad (one of the oldest towns in Europe and the main seaport on the island), Jelsa (a market town), Sućuraj and Vrboska. The ancient Greeks were responsible for setting out the agricultural field divisions of the Stari Grad Plain, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town of Hvar is the largest, oldest and the most important centre of the island's tourism. It is a port town of a unique cultural and historical heritage; and beautiful architecture. The island is characterized by gentle winters, warm summers and many hours of sunshine. Its hillsides are covered in pine forests, with vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards and lavender fields in the agricultural areas. Numerous picturesque and intact beaches and bays, virgin nature, very rich historical and cultural inheritance, the scents of lavender, olive trees and wine are few of the reasons that island Hvar Island welcomes more and more tourists each year. Today, the island of Hvar is a popular destination, consistently listed in the top 10 islands. There are a number of hotels, art galleries, museums, theatres, cafes, clubs and more. There is no airport on the island, so you will need to reach to either Split or Makarska Riviera and then make your way to Hvar Island by ferry.
