Brač (Brac) description

Brač is the largest island of the central Dalmatian islands, the third largest among the Adriatic islands and also one of the sunniest. The highest peak of the island, Vidova Gora is also the highest peak of all Croatian islands. Composed primarily of limestone and dolomite, the island's quarries have been a source of stone for building decorative stonework for centuries. The old Romans have known its quality and used this very stone to build cities, amphitheaters, temples, palaces and graves all over Dalmatia. From this Brac stone, many famous buildings in the world have been built, including the White House in Washington D.C., Berlin's Reichstag, and the Catholic cathedral in Liverpool. Closer to home, Diocletian's Palace in Split and the cathedral in Trogir, have also been constructed from this material. The biggest and most known towns are Pucisca, Supetar, Bol, Sutivan, Sumartin, Postira and Milna. The most beautiful beach on the Adriatic is considered to be Zlatni Rat, near Bol, which extends 250 meters into the sea. Bol is the main tourist centre of the island and one of the leading tourist destinations in Dalmatia. The island is also known for its fishing and agricultural products with locals producing good wine, olive oil, figs, nectarines and other fruits. Rich cultural and historic heritage that dates back to prehistoric times, unique gastronomy, stunning beaches and bays, crystal blue sea, forests and an optimal weather conditions are the guarantees of an unforgettable island holiday in an unspoiled natural environment. If you travel by road, you need to reach Split or Makarska where you can take a ferry to Brač. If you go by plane, the closest airports are in Split and Dubrovnik.
