Jablanica description

Jablanica is a town and municipality located in Herzegovina-Neretva region of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (one of the two political entities that compose Bosnia and Herzegovina). The municipality offer a wide variety of activities. The surrounding mountains such as Plasa, Čvrsnica and Prenj offer plenty of hiking trails.

Risovac, a settlement in the municipality, is the site of two necropolises, both locations filled with medieval tombstones known as Stećci. Besides, it has a ski center attracting winter tourists.

The Jablanica Lake (Jablaničko Jezero) is a very important resource. The lake is used to generate electricity while it also serves as a top summer destination for fishing, swimming, water sports and other activities.

Notable settlements include Ostrožac, which hosts the start of the annual rowing marathon and Donje Paprasko, the location of a public beach and the host of the marathon finish line.

Besides the beauty of the surrounding nature, Jablanica has a rich history. During Word War II, it was the site of the Battle of Neretva, where the Partisans managed to win a very unlikely battle. Today, the remains of the destroyed bridge still remain as a symbol of wartime difficulties and sacrifice. You can visit the War Museum, which provides an impressive collection of photographs to tell the story of this heroic event. Jablanica is the spectacular location of the praised Yugoslavian film “The battle of Neretva" (1969). Visit the War Memorial located on the top of Mount Prenj as well. Overall, this is a place a little out of the ordinary.
