Dobrun description

Dobrun Monastery, located 12 km from Visegrad, is one of the oldest monasteries in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Built in 1343 by Duke Pribil and his sons Stefan and Petar, this medieval monastery is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin. Nestled in the picturesque gorge of the Rzav river, near the border with Serbia, Dobrun Monastery offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere.

The monastery's rich history is a testament to its significance. Although it was destroyed by the Turks in 1393, it was renewed by Despot Stefan Lazarevic and Princess Milica. This medieval complex has been fascinating scholars for a long time, and its structured architecture is a sight to behold. Despite being bombed by the Nazis during World War II, Dobrun Monastery remains an important cultural and historical landmark.

The most famous frescoes in the monastery are the fresco of Emperor Dušan with his wife Jelena and son Uroš, as well as the fresco with the founder of the monastery, prefect Pribil, his sons and son-in-law Stan, which have been preserved to this day.

In the rocks above the monastery, there is a cave, the entrance of which was once walled with siga. It was inhabited by hermits who came to the monastery only during major holidays.

Today, Dobrun Monastery stands as a symbol of resilience and faith. Visitors can explore the monastery's beautiful surroundings, learn about its tumultuous past, and experience the tranquility of this sacred place. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or spirituality, Dobrun Monastery is a unique and unforgettable destination in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
