We also visit the nearby St. John Fort and St. Michael Fortress (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites), then wander through Sibenik's atmospheric historical center and admire the magnificent Cathedral of St. James (UNESCO World Heritage Site), a masterpiece of Gothic and Renaissance architecture built entirely of stone between the 15th and 16th centuries. A richly decorated gray stone column supports the black statue of the Virgin Mary, placed on one side and facing the sea and the nearby town of Primosten.
