Introduction

Join us on a relaxing 3-day discovery mini tour of Herzegovina from Mostar to Trebinje and back, crafted for seniors and mature travelers who love history, sightseeing, and local food and drinks without hurry. Following the Slow Tourism philosophy with no rush and no tight schedules, this year-round journey takes you through the most beautiful corners of southern Bosnia-Herzegovina, from the mystical Blagaj monastery and the serene Zitomislic monastery to the enchanting hill town of Pocitelj and the treasures of Trebinje.

Experience cultural aspects of this fascinating region, admire scenic roads through the Neretva and Trebisnjica river valleys, sample excellent local vintages at Tvrdos winery, and let the region's rich history unfold before you. This tour blends well-known destinations with off-the-beaten-path hidden gems – all at a gentle, easy pace, returning to Mostar.

Day after day description

Day 1. We depart from Mostar and take a short drive to Blagaj to visit the stunning Dervish monastery (Tekija) (UNESCO Tentative List Site), a 16th-century Sufi (Islamic) retreat dramatically built at the source of the emerald Buna River. We then travel to Zitomislic to see its serene Serbian Orthodox monastery, originally founded in the 16th century and beautifully restored, located on a hill overlooking the Neretva valley. Our journey continues to the enchanting Ottoman-era hill town of Pocitelj (UNESCO Tentative List Site), renowned for its beautifully preserved stone architecture and panoramic views. We then proceed to Trebinje to see the elegant Arslanagic Bridge from the 16th century. We will stay overnight in Trebinje.

Day 2. After staying in Trebinje, we travel to Tvrdos to explore its Serbian Orthodox monastery, originally founded in the 15th century, and enjoy a tasting of their excellent red wines, particularly the local Vranec variety, known for its deep color and robust body. We return to Trebinje to visit the hilltop Hercegovacka Gracanica church, a Serbian Orthodox church offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city, explore the Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord cathedral, and wander through the charming historical center with its stone-paved streets and traditional architecture. We stay another night in Trebinje.

Day 3. After 2 nights in Trebinje, we travel to the fascinating Vjetrenica cave system (UNESCO World Heritage Site), renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity and spectacular underground formations. We then continue to Stolac to admire its ancient hilltop fortress (UNESCO Tentative List Site), with origins dating to the 5th century. Our final stop is Radimlja to see the remarkable medieval stecci (tombstone) necropolis (UNESCO World Heritage Site) from the 15th-16th centuries, one of the best preserved collections of these unique carved monuments. Finally, we return to Mostar, where our memorable journey concludes.

Blagaj is a village in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of Bosnia-Herzegovina, located in about 15 km from Mostar, and is one of the most valuable mixed urban and rural built environments in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Blagaj has eleven national monuments, and is famous for the spring of the Buna river coming from cave, historical Dervish monastery (tekija) built around 1520, and medieval fortress Blagaj Fort, town-fortress complex built on a 310 meters high karst hill. Blagaj is also known as a residential area of Bosnian rulers and royal families.

Žitomislić (Zitomislic), Bosnia and Herzegovina

Architecturally, the stone-constructed parts of the town are a fortified complex, in which two stages of evolution are evident: medieval and Ottoman.

Stolac and surroundings have been inhabited since ancient times due to the area's favorable natural environment. The rich grounds along with other natural benefits attracted prehistoric man, and later the Illyrians, Romans and Slavs, all of whom left a wealth of anthropological evidence. The area has been settled for at least 15,000 years.

Radimlja, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Known for infocenter, necropolis; necropolis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Radimlja is a main UNESCO World Heritage Site where is possible to see so called Stecci, a monumental medieval tombstones. Radimlja necropolis located near town Stolac, and is one of the most valuable monuments of the medieval period in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
